Transavia, the low cost airline of the Air France-KLM group, will cancel some of its flights in May and June as jet fuel prices soar because of the Middle East war, the company told AFP on Sunday.

The cancelled flights represent about two percent of the airline's schedule, a spokesperson said.

The cancellations had originally been reported by RMC radio.

Transavia said affected customers would be offered "a free rescheduling, a voucher, or a full refund of their ticket."

Europe usually imports half of its kerosene from Gulf countries, but the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20 percent of the world's hydrocarbon production normally passes, has been effectively blocked ever since Israel and the United States attacked Iran in late February.

European Union Commissioner for energy, Dan Jorgensen, has said the EU was rapidly approaching a potential supply crisis, which would result in higher prices and cancellations.

Like other airlines, Transavia has already implemented fare increases averaging around 10 euros per round trip, the spokesperson told AFP.
