Myanmar’s Mogok region has long been world-renowned for its gemstones, but a recent discovery has been described as nothing short of incredible.

A massive 11,000-carat ruby has been unearthed in the famous Mogok Valley of the Mandalay region, marking it as one of the largest gemstones in the country's history.

According to a report by the state-owned media outlet Global New Light of Myanmar last Friday, the gemstone weighs approximately 2.2 kilograms.

Front-page photographs showed President Min Aung Hlaing inspecting the "exceptionally large and rare" stone at his office.

Quality and Characteristics
Government statements describe the ruby as having a purplish-red hue with a slight yellowish tint, identifying it as a high-quality specimen.

While a larger 21,450-carat ruby was found in the same area back in 1996, experts noted that this new find possesses far superior clarity and depth of color. Consequently, its market value is expected to be astronomical.

The Valley of 'Pigeon’s Blood' Rubies
The Mogok Valley is famous for producing "Pigeon’s Blood" rubies—the most expensive and sought-after variety in the global gem market.

Historically, emperors, kings, and warlords have fought bloody battles to control this valley. Due to a lack of stringent regulation, gemstones from these mines often fetch millions of dollars in international markets.

Political Context
The discovery is being viewed as a significant "stroke of luck" for the current administration.

Following the 2021 coup and a subsequent controversial election, former military chief Min Aung Hlaing recently took the oath as the civilian President.

The recovery of such a priceless treasure at the start of his term is being highlighted prominently by the government.
