The ongoing US-mediated ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has been extended for an additional 45 days.
US State Department Spokesperson Tommy Pigott announced the development on Friday. He stated that the fourth round of talks between Israel and Lebanon will take place in Washington on June 2 and 3.
This follows a new round of direct, face-to-face meetings between representatives of both nations that commenced on Thursday at the US State Department.
The Lebanese delegation included former Ambassador Simon Karam, Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad, and military officials, while the Israeli delegation was led by Ambassador Yechiel Leiter. US Envoys for Lebanon and Israel, Michel Issa and Mike Huckabee, were also present at the meetings.
The ceasefire was initially declared by US President Donald Trump on April 16 for a 10-day period following heightened border tensions. The truce has since been extended twice.
However, despite the ceasefire remaining in effect, clashes in southern Lebanon have not ceased entirely. Israel has continued its strikes on various areas, including Tebnine, Harouf, and Beit Yahoun. Concurrently, Hezbollah has persisted with drone, rocket, and artillery strikes targeting Israeli forces.
According to data from the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, Israeli attacks since March 2 have left 2,951 people dead and 8,988 others injured.
