Severe wildfires have rapidly spread across France and Spain, leaving firefighters struggling to control the blazes amid strong winds and intense heatwaves.

The crisis has forced more than 300,000 people across both nations to evacuate to safer areas.

Authorities have taken extensive measures to tackle the emergency, including deploying the military, declaring states of emergency, and requesting assistance from the European Union.

According to the BBC, firefighters are battling fierce wildfires in southwestern France, where high winds are driving the flames rapidly toward the city of Bordeaux. One official noted that firefighters are "not even close to bringing the fire under control."

Intense winds and high temperatures have severely hampered firefighting efforts. In Spain, a state of emergency has been declared, though a slight shift in weather conditions near Madrid has provided some relief to crews on the ground.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned that "harder times lie ahead."

Meanwhile, authorities in the Valencia region confirmed the first fatality from the wildfires.

Local media reported that firefighters discovered the body of a man in his seventies inside his vehicle while battling flames in the Salt de l'Aigua gorge area in Manises.

In France, an additional 55,000 people were ordered to evacuate late Saturday, July 25.

This brings the total number of displaced residents in the southwestern Gironde and Landes regions to approximately 250,000.

Fire captain Nicolas Braz told AFP that the fires are so intense they are generating their own weather systems and whirlwinds.

Describing the blazes as erratic and extremely difficult to control, he stated, "Another difficult night awaits us."

To tackle the crisis, the French government has deployed the military to clear brush and construct firebreaks to help contain the spread of the flames.

"We will rebuild everything," French President Emmanuel Macron assured, promising that the government will stand by the victims for as long as necessary.

With nearly 30 wildfires burning nationwide, President Macron is convening an emergency meeting. The French government described the current situation as unprecedented.

In Spain, wildfires continue near Madrid. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska told reporters, "Today we are even more discouraged than yesterday. The weather is not helping us at all."

According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, approximately 60,000 people have been evacuated from the Madrid and Ávila regions since the fires began, while over 28,000 others remain confined to their homes.

Prime Minister Sánchez reported that more than 130,000 hectares of land have burned in Spain so far this year, exceeding the annual average of 100,000 hectares recorded over the past decade.

Additionally, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that over 98,000 hectares of land have been scorched by fires across France since the beginning of 2026.
