A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Indonesia. The tremor was felt on Saturday morning (August 15) local time.
Following the earthquake, a tsunami warning has been issued in the country.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that at least three aftershocks measuring 5.9, 5.6, and 6.1 in magnitude were felt after the main earthquake.
According to a report by the US media outlet CNN, based on the intensity of the earthquake, the USGS initially expressed fears of casualties and damage.
However, no official information in this regard has been provided by the Indonesian government as yet.
According to USGS data, approximately 500,000 people experienced very strong to severe shaking during the earthquake.
This level of shaking can cause slight to moderate damage to well-built structures and extensive damage to vulnerable structures.
Indonesia is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
Due to the activity of tectonic plates in this region, regular earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
The country has faced several powerful and devastating earthquakes and tsunamis in the past as well.
