Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was returned to Adiala Jail early Friday following a medical examination conducted at a hospital in Islamabad, where doctors evaluated his condition and declared him medically fit, according to government officials.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that a panel of qualified medical specialists—including an eye specialist, a heart specialist, and a physician—carried out a thorough medical evaluation of Khan.

The transfer to the hospital was executed in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling issued on Tuesday, which directed authorities to facilitate Imran Khan's medical checkup within 48 hours following health concerns raised by his legal team.

The directive represents one of the most significant legal reliefs granted to Imran Khan since his imprisonment in 2023 on corruption charges, which he maintains are politically motivated.

The apex court also mandated that Khan be granted family visitation after months of restricted access. His sister, Azma Khan, visited him and remained present throughout the entire medical examination, Tarar confirmed.

Strict security measures were enforced around Shifa International Hospital, with police barricades, armed personnel, and armored vehicles deployed along surrounding streets.

BBC reports indicated that law enforcement cleared nearby roads while maintaining patrols throughout the area.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court instructed Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to refrain from conducting media briefings outside the medical facility, cautioning against the politicization of his hospital visit.

Khan's legal representatives have repeatedly highlighted multiple health issues, including deteriorating eyesight, alleging that he has been denied appropriate specialized care while incarcerated.

In February, one of his defense attorneys claimed Khan retained only 15 percent vision in his right eye due to delayed medical intervention by prison authorities—an assertion the government denied.

In its Tuesday directive, the Supreme Court emphasized its constitutional and legal obligation to safeguard a prisoner's "life, health, dignity and security," specifically ordering the inclusion of an eye specialist in Khan's evaluation.

Both the judiciary and PTI leadership urged supporters to refrain from assembling near the facility to avoid violating court directives.

The 73-year-old former national cricket captain, who served as prime minister from 2018 until his removal in 2022, has been detained since August 2023.

He faces over 100 legal cases involving allegations of disclosing state secrets and illegally selling state gifts, all of which he denies. Late last year, Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Khan's ongoing incarceration has prompted widespread demonstrations by his supporters and subsequent government enforcement measures.

Despite his imprisonment, the PTI founder remains a dominant political figure in Pakistan with significant public backing.
