At least 25 people, many of them schoolchildren and teenagers, were killed when a bus plunged into a ravine on the island of Fogo, Cape Verde, off the coast of West Africa in the Atlantic Ocean.

The country's national news agency, Inforpress, reported the information on Sunday (September 6).

The accident occurred late Saturday night (September 5) on a mountainous road in the northern region of Fogo.

The bus lost control, veered off the road, and plunged approximately 30 meters down a steep ravine.

According to Inforpress, many of the passengers were primary and secondary school students.

Several people injured in the accident have been admitted to the São Francisco de Assis Regional Hospital in Fogo.

Education officials stated that the trip was not organized by any local school.

Instead, the bus driver independently organized such trips every year. The driver was also killed in the accident.

The immediate cause of the accident has not yet been determined. Rescue and medical operations are currently underway.
