While Jon Ossoff's win in Georgia will grab headlines because of the 39-year-old senator's relative youth, the Senate races in Delaware, Massachusetts and New Hampshire have panned out as expected.
In the eastern state of Delaware and home of former President Joe Biden, Chris Coons retained his seat. The state has leaned Democrat in federal elections for decades.
The result means Republicans have not won a Senate race in the state since 1994.
In Massachusetts, in the country's northeast, Ed Markey's win was even more predictable. The state, which is home to Boston, is one of the most consistently Democratic in the US.
Further north, in New Hampshire, Chris Pappas beat Republican John Sununu for the open Senate seat, which was previously held by the retiring Democrat Jeanne Shaheen.
If the AP projections are confirmed, Pappas would become the first openly gay man to be elected to the Senate.
