Indian National Congress senior leader Shashi Tharoor stated that Sheikh Hasina's recent remarks in India have created complexities in various areas. He also mentioned that her comments have caused embarrassment for the Congress party.
Tharoor, an Indian Member of Parliament, made these comments on Monday (February 10) while speaking to the media after the launch of a book at the Foreign Correspondents' Club in New Delhi.
In response to a question about former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's recent statements, Shashi Tharoor said, "Her recent remarks have complicated the situation. It has created challenges for us. We are somewhat hesitant regarding Sheikh Hasina's statements."
Highlighting two key principles of India's foreign policy concerning Bangladesh, the senior Congress leader said, "I want to emphasize two points. First, we should not do anything, either publicly or privately, that gives the impression of interference in Bangladesh's internal affairs. Second, the well-being of the Bangladeshi people should be our highest priority in line with our national interest."
He added that India needs to be very cautious about the developments in Bangladesh, as the situation is sensitive. "Therefore, we must convey everywhere that we are committed to the welfare of the Bangladeshi people rather than supporting any particular party or group," he stated.
Tharoor further noted, "Bangladesh is right next to us, so we must closely and carefully observe what is happening there. I do not believe the interim government in Bangladesh is 'hostile,' but we must remain vigilant."
