U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a plan to evict homeless individuals from Washington, D.C., and relocate them to areas far from the capital. He also issued a direct warning of imprisonment for those committing crimes.
On Sunday (August 10), President Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that homeless people must "vacate immediately." He stated they would be offered housing, but "far away from the nation’s capital," and that criminals would be sent to jail.
In the post, Trump included photos of tents and trash on city streets. The President claimed that this action would make the capital "safer and more beautiful than ever before."
The White House has not yet clarified what legal authority Trump would use to remove the homeless population. Currently, the President's control is limited to federal land and buildings.
According to Community Partnership, an organization working on homelessness in the city, there are 3,782 homeless individuals in Washington. Around 800 of them live unsheltered, while the rest are in emergency shelters or transitional housing.
The announcement follows a recent violent incident in which a young administrative official was attacked, which angered Trump. Following the incident, additional federal law enforcement was deployed to D.C.
However, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser maintains that crime rates in the capital are lower than before. She noted that in the first seven months of 2025, violent crime has decreased by 26% and overall crime has dropped by nearly 7%. She added that the National Guard would be deployed to the city if necessary.
