U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could play a role in ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on Monday, October 13, while returning to the White House from Egypt, President Trump said, "Erdogan can."
He made the comment when journalists asked him if leaders, particularly Erdoğan, could assist in the Russia-Ukraine war.
Trump further explained that Erdoğan "can" because "Russia respects him."
Earlier on Monday, President Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el Sisi hosted over 20 world leaders, including President Erdoğan, in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh for a summit to sign a Gaza ceasefire deal.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Türkiye is continuing its efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2022. Ankara has previously urged Kyiv and Moscow to end the fighting through negotiations and is reportedly ready for any initiative, including mediation, to lay the groundwork for peace.
Later, Trump confirmed that he would meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday.
"I think so, yeah," the U.S. President said in response to a reporter's question about whether he would host the Ukrainian leader at the White House on Friday as he traveled home from the Middle East.
The day before, Zelenskyy said a Ukrainian delegation had departed for the United States for a number of meetings.
Zelenskyy posted on X that he, too, would "have the opportunity to come to Washington and meet with President Trump on Friday." He added, "I believe we will discuss a series of steps that I intend to propose. I am grateful to President Trump for our dialogue and his support."
