US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday (October 28) that seven "beautiful" aircraft were shot down during the brief military escalation between Pakistan and India in May, while also reiterating his claim that he brokered an end to the short-lived conflict.
Speaking to business leaders in Japan, the US President took credit for using trade and tariffs as a diplomatic tool to cease wars and conflicts globally.
"A lot of the wars that I stopped were because of tariffs," Trump told the Japanese business community, adding that he had done "a great service to the world."
He cited the South Asian conflict as an example:
Trump claims he told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whom he called "a very nice man, a very good man," and Pakistan's Field Marshal Asim Munir: "We're not going to do any trade if you're going to be fighting."
"We said, 'No. You fight, we're not doing any deals,' and within 24 hours that was the end of that. It was amazing, actually. I think trade is responsible for 70% of the fact that we didn't have wars."
The two nuclear-armed South Asian nations were engaged in a four-day confrontation in May, which Trump claims ended on May 10 due to his intervention.
The US President further asserted that he has prevented a total of eight wars through what he terms "deals and trade," including the one between Pakistan and India.
