
The verdict will be announced today against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 17 others in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) regarding the fraudulent allocation of plots, including misuse of power, in the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK)'s Purbachal New Town Project.
The verdict is scheduled to be pronounced on Monday (December 1) by Judge Md. Rabiul Alam of Dhaka's Special Judge Court-4. The same court had set this date on November 25.
The other defendants in this case are — Sheikh Rehana, her daughter Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, Administrative Officer of the Ministry of National Housing and Public Works Md. Saiful Islam Sarkar, Senior Assistant Secretary Purabi Goldar, Additional Secretary Oliullah, Secretary Kazi Wasi Uddin, former Chairman of RAJUK's PA Md. Anisur Rahman Mia, former member Mohammad Khurshid Alam, Tanmoy Das, Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Major (Eng.) Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury (Retd.), former Director Md. Nurul Islam, Assistant Director Mazharul Islam, Deputy Director Nayeb Ali Sharif, former Private Secretary-1 to the Prime Minister Mohammad Salah Uddin, and former State Minister for Housing and Public Works Sharif Ahmed.
Among them, Khurshid Alam is currently arrested and in jail, while the rest are absconding. On that day, Prosecutor Tariqul Islam presented arguments on behalf of the ACC, seeking the maximum sentence of life imprisonment for the defendants.
Additionally, lawyer Shahinur Rahman countered the arguments on behalf of Khurshid Alam, pleading for his acquittal, stating that the charges were not proven.
However, no arguments were presented on behalf of the fugitives. Following the hearing of both sides, the court set today for the announcement of the verdict.
According to case sources, ACC Deputy Director Salahuddin filed the case against Sheikh Rehana on January 13 of this year, alleging misuse of power and irregularities in the allocation of a 10 katha plot in the Purbachal New Town Project.
After investigation, Investigation Officer and ACC Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya submitted the charge sheet against 17 individuals to the court on March 10.
On July 31, the same court framed charges against the defendants and ordered the commencement of the trial. Thirty-two witnesses were cross-examined during the trial.
It is noteworthy that on November 27, following a death sentence verdict in a case related to crimes against humanity, Sheikh Hasina was also sentenced to 21 years in prison in three fraud cases involving plot allocation.
