Affiliation of 7 Colleges with DU to be Cancelled
Starting from the current academic year, the entrance exams for the seven government-affiliated colleges under Dhaka University (DU) will no longer be held.
This decision was made during a meeting between the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Dr Niaz Ahmad Khan, and the principals of the seven colleges on Monday, January 27.
Earlier, a meeting was held at the DU Vice-Chancellor's office to resolve the ongoing crisis, where DU's Vice-Chancellor and the principals of the seven affiliated colleges were present. Among them were DU's Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamun Ahmed, Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, as well as various deans and department heads involved with the seven colleges.
Previously, in a press conference held at Dhaka College, students of the seven colleges presented six demands. Among these, they gave a 4-hour ultimatum for the resignation of DU's Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed. They also demanded the punishment of police officers involved in the attacks that took place late on Sunday night.
The six demands of the students are as follows:
The DU administration must apologize for the conflict between the students of Dhaka College and the seven colleges and must ensure the resignation of Pro-Vice-Chancellor Mamun Ahmed.
The police officers involved in the brutal attack on Dhaka College students, including the Assistant Commissioner (AC) and Officer-in-Charge (OC) of New Market Police Station, must be removed, and departmental action should be taken based on an investigation.
The DU students involved in making obscene remarks and inappropriate gestures towards female students of Eden College and Begum Badrunnesa College, as well as other female students of the seven colleges, should be brought to justice.
The final academic and administrative ties between Dhaka University and the seven colleges must be severed, and a roadmap for an independent university for the students of the seven colleges must be drafted within 24 hours.
To resolve the current situation, an immediate meeting should be arranged with a representative team of students from the seven colleges, including the Chief Advisor, Education Advisor, Student Advisor Nahid Islam, UGC members, and DU Vice-Chancellor.
The roads in the areas related to Dhaka University and the city corporation should be opened to the public.
