PM asks AL men to work for ensuring fair election

Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina today asked her party men to work for ensuring a free, fair and peaceful national election on January 7 so that none can raise any question about it.

She also reiterated her call to vote for "Boat" for continuation of the development.

"You will work for holding the next general election in a free, fair and peaceful manner so that none can raise any question about the polls," she said.

She made the call while virtually addressing the election rallies in Panchagarh and Lalmonirhat in Rangpur division, Natore and Pabna in Rajshahi division and Khagrachhari in Chattogram division together from the AL office at Tejgaon here this afternoon.

The AL chief asked her party men to make sure the participation of the people in the next polls so that they can vote freely for the candidates of their choice.

"Participation of the people and the voters in the upcoming election is a must. It matters nothing which party is taking part in the election or not," she said.

She mentioned that BNP will not participate in the election as there is no guarantee of rigging votes.
"There was no question about the fairness of 2008 election. BNP-led alliance only got 30 seats in that election. They will not take part in this election as they failed to assume power in 2008," she said.

The premier reminded all that the BNP was been dislodged from the power twice by the countrymen on charges of vote rigging.

But the Awami League believes in election and thus empowers the people as it had established democracy and voting rights of the people after a long struggle.

The AL chief asked her party men to shun the path of violence and give scope for electioneering to every candidate, including the independent candidates of her party, to drum up public supports in favour of them.

She said all the candidates will have to go to the people and seek vote for them shunning the path of violence without interrupting others in their election campaign.

"We want the people to cast their vote freely. They will vote for the candidates of their choice and thus democracy will be strengthened further," she said.

Otherwise, Bangladesh and its development will be ruined, she warned.

"Those who get votes from the people will be elected. None will interfere with anyone's rights. I don't want to see any violence and conflict to this end," she said.

She sounded a note of warning against his party men in case of any involvement in violence over the election.

"If any violence occurs and involvement of any of my partymen is found, they will not be spared. Keep in mind that I will take appropriate measures in this regard," she said.

The Awami League president once again sought vote for her party's electoral symbol 'Boat' for the continuation of the ongoing development and transforming the country into a poverty-and hunger-free Smart Bangladesh.

"The people of the country had got independence and financial freedom while Bangladesh has earned the status of a developing country... We will build a developed, prosperous, poverty-and hunger-free Smart Bangladesh if people vote us to power to serve them," she said.

The Awami League president formally started the party's electioneering on Wednesday through the visits to the shrines of saints Shahjalal and Shah Paran in Sylhet.

She then attend a public rally, organised by Sylhet district and city units of the AL, at the Government Alia Madrasa ground in the city's Chowhatta area at 2:00pm.

She is expected to be in Barishal on December 29 and address an election rally in the district town at 3:00pm on that day.

Sheikh Hasina will then visit Gopalganj on December 30 and address a rally in Gopalganj-3 (Tungipara and Kotalipara) constituency. She will address the AL rally in Madaripur-3 the same day.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, MP, Presidium Members Kazi Zafarullah and Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Join General Secretary and Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, MP, Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua and his deputy Sayem Khan were present at Tejgaon party office end.

While local AL leaders were present at the five district rallies which turned into human seas with participation of hundreds of thousands of people from all strata of life.

A video documentary on the unprecedented nationwide developments in every sector, including health, education, agriculture, infrastructure, information communication and technology, poverty reduction, socio-economic and food production, carried out by the Awami League government in the last 15 years, was screened on the occasion.

Awami League (AL) President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said the countrymen will give a befitting reply with votes to the local and foreign conspiracies being hatched to bring third party to power to disrupt January 7 election. However, she said the countrymen will give a befitting reply to those conspirators through votes on the January 7 election. "Various conspiracies are being hatched to foil the polls. Many are also involved internationally. They are working to bring a third party to power in Bangladesh. We will give a befitting reply to them through the January 7 election," she said while addressing a grand election rally at Govt Sheikh Mujibur Rahman College ground at Tungipara this morning. "What can the third party do? They can't do any development of the country. You had witnessed what they did in 2007," she said. "We will take part in the January 7 election with our party's electoral symbol 'boat'. Go early to the polling centres to cast your votes to show the world that we can hold the election in a free, fair and neutral manner," she added.

BNP-Jamaat's politics is to burn people: PM

Awami League (AL) President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said that politics of Awami League is just for the welfare of people, but BNP-Jamaat's politics is to burn people. "Their (BNP-Jamaat's) politics is to burn people. Do the people want them? Tell me. No, people don't want them," she said while addressing an election rally at the historic Bangabandhu Udyan in the divisional headquarters. The AL chief condemned severely the acts of BNP-Jamaat for killing and burning people, and said: "When we develop the country for the people, at that time BNP- Jamaat unleashed arson attacks." She reiterate her call to the country's people, especially the new voters, to vote for her party to continue the unstoppable progress of Bangladesh, saying the new voters certainly don't want their votes to go in vein. "Awami League believes in the power of the youths. Those who are new voters and will exercise their franchise for the first time, I would request them to cast their votes for boat (election symbol) to ensure the victory of Awami League," she added. Sheikh Hasina said that BNP-Jamaat has no right to do politics in Bangladesh as they burn people and kill people while people do not want this kind of destructive activities anymore. Polls to Naogaon-2 postponed

The election to Naogaon-2 constituency (Patnitala and Dhamoirhat) has been postponed after the death of an independent candidate. As a result, the 12th parliamentary polls will be held in 299 seats on January 7. The returning officer concerned took the decision and a new schedule for the constituency will be announced later, Ashok Kumar Debnath, additional secretary of the Election Commission (EC) told on friday (Dec 29). Earlier, Aminul Haque, an independent candidate of Naogaon-2 constituency died early Friday while undergoing treatment at United Hospital in the capital Dhaka. He first bought Awami League's nomination for the seat to contest in the national election but did not get the ruling party ticket. Later, he submitted nomination form to compete in the polls as an independent candidate but the EC cancelled his candidacy citing different inconsistencies. Subsequently, he filed a writ petition in the High Court to get back his candidacy and the HC declared his candidacy valid on Wednesday. On Thursday, he was allocated the Eagle, an electoral symbol, from the office of Naogaon deputy commissioner and returning officer. But a day after, he died.

Barisal awaits PM Hasina's address

PM Sheikh Hasina has arrived in Barisal to address the Awami League's election rally at Bangabandhu Udyan. She reached Barisal Circuit House at 1pm on Friday. From there, she, along with her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, reached the rally venue, Bangabandhu Udyan, at 2:58pm. Although the premier was scheduled to join the rally around 3pm, hundreds of thousands of people thronged packed into the rally ground since early morning. Within a few hours the ground filled to the brim as a good number of people were seen taking position around the ground overnight to secure their places. The crowd then spilled over the surrounding areas, roads and empty places long before she was to take the stage made after the shape of a boat. Since early morning, a stream of people, including women, were seen marching towards the venue chanting slogans “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu” and holding colourful placards, banners and festoons. Many of them wearing colourful T-shirts, cap on heads, head bands with drums, election symbol boat as well as national and party flags. From 10am, the leaders and activists came and took positions all over the field. Law and order forces have taken extensive security measures for this event. Several mega projects are still ongoing in Barisal. Moreover, after the inauguration of the Padma Bridge, this is the first historic public meeting of the prime minister in Barisal. People have gathered to express their gratitude to the prime minister and to get a close look at the public meeting. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim will also speak there.
