Senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member and former minister Rafiqul Islam Miah remains in critical condition on life support at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, despite undergoing a successful surgical procedure on his esophagus.
The operation was performed on Saturday by a specialized medical board assigned to his care.
Sharing an update on Sunday, the veteran leader's personal political secretary, Moksedur Rahman Abir, stated, "The doctors successfully completed surgery on Sir's esophagus. He remains on life support and his condition is still critical".
He added that medical professionals have placed the senior politician under intensive 72-hour observation, noting, "The physicians have said it is too early to make any assessment. We have to wait".
Both sons of the former minister have flown back to Bangladesh from overseas to be by their father's side. Additionally, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, spouse of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is maintaining direct communication with the attending medical panel to track his progress.
The 85-year-old politician was initially admitted to the hospital on July 21 under the care of specialist physician Farid Hossain.
His health subsequently deteriorated on July 23, prompting doctors to place him on life support.
