The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) has arrested retired Major Mohammad Akhteruzzaman Ranjan, a Jamaat-e-Islami leader, following allegations that he threatened the executive director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and physically assaulted a security supervisor.
A case has been filed against him under multiple sections of the Penal Code for creating chaos over baggage and trolley crises at the airport, obstructing government duties, and physically assaulting an on-duty security official.
On Friday (October 2), Md. Shahriar Alam Sojib, a security official at the airport, filed the case as the plaintiff at the Airport Police Station.
Sub-Inspector Jasmin, the duty officer at Airport Police Station, confirmed the matter and stated that Sub-Inspector Majedul is investigating the case.
Key Highlights & Incident Details:
Triggering Event
According to the First Information Report (FIR), a trolley shortage and baggage delays occurred on October 1 at around 10:40 AM near Luggage Belt No. 8 due to heavy passenger pressure from a flight arriving from Medina.
Altercation with Executive Director
As passengers grew agitated, Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad arrived at the scene following a call by lawmaker Mohammad Kamal Hossain to help calm the situation. As the executive director attempted to restore order, retired Major Akhteruzzaman reportedly grew furious, lunged at him aggressively, hurled abusive language, and issued open threats including, "I will beat you up," and "I will grab you by the neck and throw you out." He also made extremely offensive remarks regarding the Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
Assault on Security Staff
The situation escalated further when protocol assistants accompanying Akhteruzzaman began recording videos on their mobile phones inside the airport's restricted Key Point Installation (KPI) area. When on-duty Security Supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin forbade them from recording, Akhteruzzaman abused him and physically assaulted him. Furthermore, he threw and damaged bottles of holy Zamzam water belonging to ordinary passengers off a trolley and acted aggressively toward a Biman Bangladesh Airlines representative.
Security Concerns
The plaintiff noted that the accused's actions obstructed government officials from performing their duties at a sensitive and restricted installation, severely threatening the airport's normal discipline and security.
Investigation
Police stated that a thorough investigation will be conducted using relevant CCTV footage, eyewitness testimonies, and other evidence to take appropriate legal action.
Background
Authorities noted that the accused has a controversial political history. Reports indicate he was expelled from his former party, the BNP, a total of five times for violating party discipline, resulting in the revocation of his primary membership and all positions. Observers view this recent incident of obstructing government work and assault at the airport as a continuation of such unruly and controversial conduct.
