New Zealand Reach T20 World Cup Final After 14 Years
The Women's T20 World Cup began in 2009, and although New Zealand reached the finals in the first two editions, they failed to clinch the title. Now, 14 years later, the Kiwi women have secured a spot in the final again. They defeated West Indies by 8 runs in the second semifinal of the ongoing tournament.
On Friday, October 18, New Zealand batted first and set a target of 129 runs. In response, West Indies managed 120/8 in their allotted overs, falling short by 8 runs.
West Indies struggled at the start of their chase. Opener Kiana Joseph was dismissed after scoring 12 runs from 12 balls. Captain Shemaine Campbelle also failed to make an impact, departing for just 3 runs.
Another opener, Hayley Matthews, made 15 off 21 balls, leaving Deandra Dottin to fight alone. After Alia Alleyne was dismissed for 4, Dottin found some support, scoring 33 from 22 balls.
In the final moments, Afy Fletcher and Zaida James brought excitement to the match. West Indies needed 15 runs off the last 6 balls. Fletcher hit a boundary off the first ball, raising hopes, but James was bowled on the third delivery, ending the Caribbean side’s hopes. Fletcher remained unbeaten on 17, and West Indies finished with 120/8.
For New Zealand, Eden Carson took 3 wickets, while Amelia Kerr, Suzie Bates, Lea Tahuhu, and Fran Jonas each claimed one wicket.
Earlier, after winning the toss, New Zealand’s openers made a strong start, putting on 48 runs. Suzie Bates scored 26 off 28 balls before being dismissed. However, Amelia Kerr struggled, managing just 7 from 11 balls. Georgia Plimmer contributed 33 from 31 deliveries.
The middle order faltered, with Brooke Halliday (18), Sophie Devine (12), Maddy Green (3), and Rosemary Mair (2) failing to make significant contributions. In the end, Lea Tahuhu's 6 and an unbeaten 20 from Isabella Gaze helped New Zealand post a competitive 128/9.
