New Zealand on Sunday registered a historic Test win in India after 36 years as they beat the hosts by eight wickets in the first Test at Bengaluru in a rain-curtailed match.

Chasing a modest total of 107 to win, New Zealand started the day on a bad note, losing a wicket of the second ball. However, Will Young battled a stunning spell of fast bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj to remain unbeaten on 48. Rachin Ravindra followed up his first innings century with 39 not out off just 46 balls. Rachin Ravindra was named the man of the match.

India losing all ten wickets for 46 runs in their first innings and seven wickets for 54 runs in the second innings spelled doom for Rohit Sharma's men.

For India, Bumrah took both the wickets, while Siraj and Jadeja bowled well but were unlucky to not find any success. Premier off-spinner R Ashwin surprisingly bowled only two overs.

The last time New Zealand won a Test match in India was in 1988 when they won by 136 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The win in Bengaluru on Sunday is only the third time New Zealand has managed to win a Test match in India.

The last time New Zealand played a series in India, India won the two-Test match series 1-0 in 2021.

The second India vs New Zealand Test match begins in Pune on October 24.

Brief scores: India 46 & 462 in 99.3 overs (Sarfaraz Khan 150, Rishabh Pant 99, Virat Kohli 70, Rohit Sharma 52, William O’Rourke 3/92, Matt Henry 3/102, Ajaz Patel 2/100) lost to New Zealand 402 & 110/2 in 27.4 overs (Will Young 48*, Rachin Ravindra 39*, Jasprit Bumrah 2/29).
