Nations League:
Ronaldo's Record Propels Portugal to Quarterfinals
Portugal secured a dominant 5-1 victory over Poland in their UEFA Nations League group-stage match at Estádio do Dragão, earning a spot in the quarterfinals. Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice and set a new international record for the most career wins (132), surpassing former teammate Sergio Ramos.
Poland, missing their all-time top scorer Robert Lewandowski due to injury, struggled against the hosts. After a goalless first half, Rafael Leão broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. Ronaldo doubled the lead in the 72nd minute with a penalty following a handball by Jakub Kiwior.
Portugal scored three more goals in quick succession, with Bruno Fernandes (80'), Pedro Neto (83'), and Ronaldo’s stunning bicycle kick (87') adding to the tally. Poland’s Dominik Marczuk netted a consolation goal in the 88th minute.
Ronaldo now has five goals in five matches this Nations League season and also holds the record for being the oldest player to score a brace for Portugal.
Portugal tops the group with 13 points from five unbeaten matches, followed by Croatia with 7 points. Poland and Scotland share 4 points each, trailing behind.
