Australia's Twenty20 domestic competition will launch its cricket season outside of Australia by hosting a Big Bash League match in India this coming December, with officials eyeing a massive turnout at Chennai's 38,000-seat MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Following months of widespread speculation, the fixture pitting the Melbourne Renegades against the Perth Scorchers on December 12 was officially confirmed on Friday during a special event at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The announcement was spearheaded by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who met at the legendary venue alongside figures including former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh.

The marquee evening fixture in Australia will be timed to kick off during the afternoon hours in India, intentionally scheduled to follow the conclusion of the fourth day of the ongoing Test match between Australia and New Zealand in Perth, Western Australia.
