Bangladesh have officially been eliminated from their inaugural appearance at the FIFA ASEAN Cup following another modest display against East Asian opposition, despite observers noting a marked improvement during their second Group A fixture on Monday, which ended in a 1-0 defeat to Singapore in Jakarta.

The setback follows an earlier, listless performance in their opening match on Wednesday at the same venue, where Bangladesh suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against Malaysia.

For the second fixture, Bangladesh head coach Thomas Dooley altered his starting lineup with four adjustments. Jamal Bhuyan replaced Sohel Rana, Zidane Yousuf came in for Shakil Topu, Shuki Itofusa replaced Farhaan Ali Wahid, and Sheikh Morsalin was selected ahead of Fahamedul Islam.

Both teams adopted a cautious tactical strategy on Monday, yielding sparse clear-cut scoring opportunities. However, Bangladeshi goalkeeper Mehedy Hasan remained the far more active of the two custodians throughout the opening half.

The deadlock broke in the 35th minute when Harhys Stewart met an innocuous cross from the left flank with a powerful header from just inside the penalty area, leaving Mehedy Hasan with no chance as the ball settled into the back of the net.

Singapore came close to doubling their advantage before the half-time whistle when a strike hit the crossbar, highlighting the gap in offensive output between the two sides.

During the second period, Singapore focused primarily on safeguarding their lean lead, relying on Bangladesh’s persistent struggles in crafting and finishing scoring opportunities to secure all three points.

The victory keeps Singapore in contention for advancement to the subsequent round ahead of their final group match against Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh will play for pride in their closing group fixture on the same day when they face hosts Indonesia.
