Hasan Mahmud carved his name into the record books on Sunday by becoming the first Bangladeshi fast bowler to secure a Test match hat-trick, achieving the feat against Afghanistan on the third day of the ongoing one-off Test in Abu Dhabi.
The 26-year-old pacer dismissed Ismat Alam, Qais Ahmad, and Zia-ur-Rehman in consecutive deliveries during the 83rd over at Zayed Cricket Stadium.
His historic spell ended a 23-year wait for a Bangladesh Test hat-trick, making him only the third bowler from the nation to accomplish the milestone after leg-spinner Alok Kapali—who claimed Bangladesh’s first Test hat-trick against Pakistan in 2003 by dismissing Shabbir Ahmed, Danish Kaneria and Umar Gul—and off-spinner Sohag Gazi.
Hasan initiated the sequence by bowling Ismat for one with a sharp delivery that nipped back in and snaked under the bat.
On the following ball, he generated an outside edge off Qais, which was caught acrobatically by a diving Litton Das behind the stumps.
On the hat-trick delivery, Hasan trapped Zia leg-before-wicket.
Although the on-field umpire initially turned down the appeal, Bangladesh successfully reviewed the decision after ball-tracking technology verified that the ball was hitting the stumps.
The rapid three-wicket burst left Afghanistan reeling at 220 for eight in 82.5 overs, trailing Bangladesh's first-innings total of 346 by 126 runs.
While Rahmat Shah offered firm resistance with a resilient 86, Hasan’s late-innings strike severely dented Afghanistan’s hopes of reducing the deficit.
By the end of the spell, Hasan had registered impressive figures of four wickets for 39 runs in 17.5 overs, teaming up with fellow seamer Ebadot Hossain, who picked up three for 52, to put Bangladesh firmly in command of the match.
