Inter Miami secured a 3-1 victory over Atlanta United in Major League Soccer (MLS).
With a brace and an assist in this match, Lionel Messi became the first player in tournament history to record a minimum of 15 assists in three consecutive seasons.
Playing away at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday (October 18), visiting Miami took a 1-0 lead in the first half.
In the second half, the Argentine superstar scored twice to triple the advantage.
The hosts managed to narrow the deficit late in the game with a penalty goal. Throughout the match, Cristian González’s side maintained dominance over their opponents.
With this performance, Messi’s professional career goal tally reaches 936.
Sitting at the top of the Golden Boot race with 25 goals in the current MLS campaign, he has also racked up 15 assists.
This achievement marks a historic milestone as Messi becomes the sole player in MLS history to deliver at least 15 assists across three straight seasons.
Meanwhile, Son Heung-min, the South Korean star playing for Los Angeles FC, currently matches his assist count this season.
Last season, Messi clinched the MLS Golden Boot with 29 goals. He and Josef Martínez remain the only players in league history to score at least 25 goals in two separate seasons.
Overall, the Albiceleste maestro has directly contributed to 40 goals this term.
Messi trails Carlos Vela's record of 40 goal contributions set with Los Angeles FC in 2019 by nine goal involvements. However, the Miami captain still has four matches remaining.
Following an assist in the first half against Atlanta, Messi struck twice within a span of just four minutes in the second half. He netted his 24th and 25th goals of the current league season in the 56th and 60th minutes.
Jeremy Berterame provided the assists for both goals, while Luis Suárez also contributed to Messi's second strike.
