The world’s largest gathering on free knowledge—Wikimania 2025—was held in Nairobi, Kenya. Several Wikimedians from Bangladesh also joined this international event. During the conference, Maryana Iskandar, Chief Executive Officer of the Wikimedia Foundation, gave an exclusive interview to RTV.
In the interview, she said that the greatest contribution of Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects could be to foster discussions on the “use of AI for good.” According to her, people must remain at the center of technology, so that the benefits of innovation can be shared with the world, while still staying true to ethics and values.
Maryana further shared that the success of the Bangla Wikipedia community has inspired her. Recently, through edit-a-thons, awards, and special contributions, Bangladeshi editors have established a strong presence.
This Egyptian-born American social entrepreneur, who took office in 2021, emphasized that the need for Wikipedias in different languages remains vital. In her view, Wikimania is opening new horizons of free knowledge by bringing together diverse languages and cultures.
That interview between Delwar Hossain and Maryana Iskandar took place on 7 August 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya.
Rtv: Could you tell us about the Wikimania conference? How can this conference contribute to the development of language projects like the Bangla Wikipedia?
Mariyana: This year marks the 20th edition of Wikimania, which is a huge milestone for our movement. It’s exciting that Wikimania has traveled all over the world. Two years ago, we were in Asia, in Singapore, and last year, we were in Katowice, Poland. This year, for the first time ever, we are in East Africa, here in Nairobi. I think this diversity allows people to learn about how much knowledge can be created in multiple languages like Bangla. I’m so happy that all of you are here, and it gives us an opportunity to interact with you and also learn more about your language.
Rtv: Are there any plans to host a Wikimania or similar event in Bangladesh or South Asia?
Mariyana: It’s not my decision. The Wikimania process is run by the Core Organizing Team (COT), which is a very sophisticated Wikimedia process with many volunteers who take applications. I hope Bangladesh will learn about the process and be part of it, but the decision is not mine.
Rtv: There has been a lot of discussion about AI in many sessions. With AI improving translation quality, do you see less need for Wikipedias in different languages? How is the Wikimedia Foundation addressing this challenge?
Mariyana: The most important thing that I think Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects can offer the world is to talk about AI for good and how important it is that humans stay at the center of the technology, even with AI. I think this means we have to find a way to get the best of what this technology and innovation can give the world, while at the same time staying true to our principles, values, and core beliefs. These have been the kinds of conversations we’ve had at Wikimania about AI.
Rtv: Would you like to share a message with the Bangla Wikipedia community?
Mariyana: I recently learned about many incredible accomplishments of the Bangla community. I don’t know all of them, but I know that many members of your community have been getting prizes and awards, contributing to the projects, and participating in editathons. I also heard about a Bangla keyboard that was created. So, congratulations to all of you for these many achievements. I think your energy, even here at Wikimania, has always been a highlight, and I just wish the community well and want to say thank you for making time to talk to me.
