To enhance the police's technological capabilities and expertise in combating cybercrime, the government has initiated the expansion of digital forensic and cyber laboratories.
As part of this effort, new digital forensic and cyber labs will be inaugurated in Chattogram next month, alongside existing facilities in Dhaka.
Infrastructure development and the formation of a dedicated, comprehensive "Cyber Security Unit" within the police force are currently underway to strictly curb fraud involving computers, mobile phones, the internet, and other digital devices or networks.
According to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), a gazette notification for the establishment of the specialized Cyber Security Unit was published on September 21 of this year.
The government is also working to foster international cooperation with various countries to counter cyber offenses.
Additionally, relevant officials noted that bilateral discussions and joint initiatives between Bangladesh and China are underway to exchange technological experience and tour advanced laboratories to improve cyber security and crime suppression.
Speaking on the matter, CID Special Superintendent of Police (Media) Md. Chufi Ullah stated that cyber fraud, hacking, and online harassment cases reported to the CID are being investigated with utmost professionalism and dedication.
He noted that new training modules are being incorporated into ongoing programs at the Cyber Training Center, Forensic Training Institute (FTI), and Detective Training School (DTS).
Furthermore, under the initiative of Police Headquarters, a nationwide cyber "Training of Trainers" (ToT) course has recently been launched, with CID officers actively participating.
CID Performance and Statistics
According to CID data, a total of 191 cases—comprising 32 GR (General Register) and 159 CR (Complaint Register) cases related to cybercrime—were filed over the past year, spanning from September 1, 2025, to September 23, 2026.
During this one-year period, 101 individuals were arrested in connection with cyber offenses.
The CID reports that cybercriminals primarily engage in unauthorized access to personal Facebook, email, or bank accounts through hacking to carry out fraud.
Other common tactics include creating fake links or websites to steal users' confidential passwords and personal information, as well as identity theft and national ID card forgery.
Cybercriminals also resort to intimidation, online blackmail, and defamation via social media and the internet.
Detailing law enforcement efforts, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) Chief Additional Police Commissioner Md. Shafikul Islam stated that cybercriminals are being brought to justice, emphasizing that the police remain vigilant in suppressing crime and ensuring public safety.
Police Headquarters and DMP Measures
Police Headquarters reported that Bangladesh Police are playing a robust and active role in bolstering their institutional and technological capabilities to fight cybercrime.
In light of increasing internet abuse, online fraud, and financial scams, major steps have been taken to modernize and skill up the force.
As part of these measures, a special 10-day ToT course on investigating cybercrime cases recently commenced at the Police Staff College in Mirpur.
Through this program, 332 police officers have been trained in phases to subsequently instruct grassroots investigators. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir inaugurated this specialized investigative training course.
DMP Media and Public Relations Division Deputy Police Commissioner Md. Aktar Hossain affirmed that the police are handling cybercrime responsibilities with dedication and accountability, striving for swift arrests.
He noted that the DMP Detective Branch operates an existing cyber lab, and a forensic lab has been approved for the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.
Furthermore, relevant personnel across the DMP will receive rapid training on digital case investigations.

Emerging Threats and Public Awareness
Police highlighted that cybercrime—particularly hacking, financial fraud, and offenses targeting women and children—is on a steady rise, making it more alarming than conventional theft.
Among emerging threats, criminal rings have been actively utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based voice or video cloning (deepfakes) on social media and messaging apps to impersonate acquaintances and extort money.
To counter these trends, police are running public awareness campaigns at the grassroots level through community policing to educate citizens about online blackmail, phishing links, and financial scams, stressing that widespread public awareness remains vital alongside law enforcement actions.
