Five civilians were killed following a U.S. attack on cargo boats, Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported on Tuesday (May 5). The report contradicts earlier claims by the United States, which stated that the military had targeted Iranian speedboats.

According to the Iranian report, U.S. forces attacked two small civilian cargo vessels traveling from Khasab, along the coast of Oman, toward Iran. Five civilian passengers on board those vessels were reportedly killed in the strike.

Earlier, Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, Deputy Commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), claimed that the U.S. military had sunk six small Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz.

During a press conference, Cooper stated that the Iranian vessels were engaged by U.S. Apache and MH-60 Seahawk helicopters.
