Tehran has claimed retaliation following U.S. strikes on Iranian territory, stating that it carried out a coordinated attack using ballistic missiles and drones on two American airbases in Jordan.

Iran claimed that the strikes on the King Hussein and Azraq airbases caused extensive damage.

According to Anadolu Agency, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the retaliatory strikes early Monday (August 31) in response to the U.S. attacks.

The IRGC Aerospace Force stated that the operations targeted the technical and maintenance infrastructure as well as aircraft hangars at both airbases, resulting in "heavy damage."

The Iranian force warned that any future attacks would be met with an even harsher response.

Earlier on Sunday (August 30), the U.S. military launched strikes targeting two missile launcher systems on Iran’s Larak Island, a U.S. official told Axios.

This marked the first U.S. attack on Iranian territory since late July.

The strike targeted systems allegedly preparing to launch rockets carrying naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

The IRGC reported that the attack killed and injured several of its fighters and civilians, and pledged to retaliate.

Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported that preliminary information suggests the attack may have been carried out using drones.

Tensions between Tehran and Washington have remained high since the war began with U.S. strikes on Iran in late February of this year.

Although the two sides reached a framework agreement in June through mediation by Pakistan and Qatar, disputes have persisted.

Following disagreements over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States conducted two weeks of continuous bombing in July and reinstated a naval blockade.
