3rd phase upazila polls voting ends, counting underway

Voting in the third phase of upazila parishad elections ended peacefully. The voting began at 8:00 am and continued till 4:00 pm without any break. The vote counting is underway.

In the third phase, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were used in 16 out of 87 upazilas. In the rest, voters cast their votes in ballots.

According to the EC, voting was supposed to be held in 112 upazilas in the third phase. However, voting in 25 upazilas have been postponed due to the impact of cyclone Remal. As such, voting was completed in 87 upazilas today (May 29).

According to the EC, a total of 1,152 candidates are in the fray in the third phase. A total of 397 candidates are contesting for the chairman post, 456 for the vice chairman post and 299 for the women (reserved) vice chairman.

The suspended upazilas are Sarankhola, Morrelganj and Mongla in Bagerhat district, Koyra, Paikgachha and Dumuria in Khulna district, Gournadi and Agailjhara in Barishal district, Patuakhali Sadar, Mirzaganj and Dumki in Barishal district, Mathbaria in Pirojpur, Tazumuddin and Lalmohan in Bhola, Rajapur and Kanthalia in Jhalakathi, Bamna and Patharghata in Barguna, Baghaichhari in Rangamati, Khaliajuri in Netrakona and Kachua and Faridganj in Chandpur.

In the second phase, 22 candidates were elected uncontested in 156 upazila elections. The voter turnout was 38 percent. The fourth phase of voting will be held on June 5.
