Flood situation to improve, river water still above danger level

The flood situation in different parts of the country is on the way to improvement due to reduced rain. In Sylhet, the water of the river is still flowing over the danger level at five points. According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), the flood situation in the region may be normal within the next three days.

Meanwhile, the water level of Teesta River in Kaunia upazila of Rangpur has decreased in the last 24 hours but still flowing over the danger level. Rangpur Water Development Board (WDB) officials said the water level was flowing 20cm above the danger level at 9am today (June 22) as the water level decreased by 32cm in the last 24 hours.

After five days, the sun was seen in the sky of Sylhet. People living in different areas of the district expressed relief after seeing the sun on Friday morning. The flood situation has improved slightly. However, more than 10 lakh people are still under water.

In Sunamganj, the flood waters have started receding as there was no rainfall in the last 36 hours and the sky remained sunny on Friday. This has brought relief to the people. Water has receded from the main roads of the city. People in Shantibagh, South Natunpara, Hasannagar, Sultanpur, Aftabnagar and Kalipur areas of the municipality are still underwater.

In Gaibandha, the water level of all the rivers has increased due to upstream rains and hill streams. In the meantime, the Teesta water is flowing over the danger level. Flood situation is expected in Gaibandha as there is a possibility of incessant rains in the next few days.

In Kurigram, the flood situation has worsened as the water level of all the rivers including Dharla, Dudhkumar, Teesta and Brahmaputra has increased further. The waters of Teesta and Dharla rivers have been flowing above the danger level on Friday (June 21). The water level of Teesta River is flowing 55cm above the danger level at Kaunia point and the water of Dharla River is flowing 15cm above the danger level at Shimulbari point of Phulbari. As a result, new areas are being flooded.
