River Water Increasing, Fear of Flood in Four Districts
Due to the active monsoon, it has been raining continuously for the past few days in various districts of the country including Dhaka. The Meteorological Department has predicted that this trend of rainfall may increase in the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the water levels of some rivers have already started rising due to heavy rains. In this situation, there is a threat of flooding in the lower areas of four districts of the country.
A message issued by the Water Development Board's Flood Forecasting and Warning Center on Friday (September 27) said that in the next 24 hours, some low-lying areas in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram may be flooded.
Highlighting the current condition of the country's rivers and streams amid the rains, the executive engineer of WDB Udar Rahman said that at present the water level of all the main rivers and streams of the country is flowing below the boundary line. However, the water in the Teesta and Dharla rivers in the Rangpur division is increasing rapidly. On the other hand, the water of the Dudhkumar River is flat and stable and flows below the danger level.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center said, according to the information of meteorological agencies, there is a possibility of very heavy rainfall in the Rangpur division and adjacent upstream for the next 24 hours. Due to this, the water level of Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers may rise rapidly in the next 24 hours.
In this situation, the water of the Teesta River in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, and Kurigram districts may rise and flow below the danger level and some low-lying areas may be flooded.
Apart from this, the water level of other major rivers of Rangpur division is also increasing, said the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center. However, in the next 24 hours, the water of these rivers may flow below the tidal limit and the water level may decrease in the next day.
The water level of the Brahmaputra River and its downstream Jamuna River in the Rangpur division is also increasing. However, it is flowing below the boundary line. Brahmaputra-Jamuna water level may remain stable for the next 5 days. Also, the water level of Ganga in Rajshahi division is decreasing and the water level of Padma downstream is stable. Also, it is flowing under the oceanic boundary.
In this situation, the water level of the Ganga-Padma River may decrease slowly for the next 2 days, and the water level may stabilize the next day and increase in the next 2 days. However, the water of these rivers may flow below the danger line, said the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center.
Apart from Rangpur, the water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet division are rising and flowing below the flood line, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center said. The water level of these rivers may decrease in the next 3 days. Besides, the water levels of other major rivers Manu, Khoai, and Dhalai are decreasing. Besides, the water level of the Someshwari, and Bhulai rivers is increasing and the water level of the Sarigoin, and Kangsha rivers is stable. The water of these rivers is flowing below the danger line and the water level may decrease for the next 3 days.
On the other hand, the water level of the Muhuri, Feni, Sangu, Matamuhuri, and Gomti rivers of the Chattogram division is decreasing. And Halda River water level is stable. There is a low trend of heavy rainfall over the Chattogram division and adjoining upstream for the next 3 days. As a result, the water level of rivers in the Chattogram division may decrease during this time. Apart from this, as there is no low pressure in the Bay of Bengal area, the flood forecasting and warning center has also predicted that the coastal rivers of Barishal and Khulna divisions may observe normal tides for the next 3 days.
