During the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the interim government, is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden. If everything goes as planned, this meeting between the top leaders of Bangladesh and the United States is set to take place at the UN headquarters on Tuesday, September 24, around noon, local time.

For the past three decades, no head of state or government from Bangladesh has had such a meeting. A diplomatic source from Dhaka referred to this as a rare occurrence for Bangladesh. They claim that it’s very unusual for the U.S. president to have separate meetings with the heads of state during the General Assembly session.

A diplomat from Dhaka mentioned that the U.S. president typically stays in New York for about a day to a day and a half during the General Assembly. According to U.S. protocol, the president hosts a reception as the host country, where heads of state or government are invited. This gives global leaders an opportunity to meet the U.S. president. Outside of that, it’s rare to get a separate meeting with the U.S. president, and if it happens, it’s considered exclusive.

The diplomat further mentioned that, if everything proceeds as expected, there is a plan for a meeting between the U.S. president and the chief advisor. This meeting is scheduled for September 24 and is expected to be a rare event for Bangladesh during this session.

When asked about the significance of the meeting between Joe Biden and Dr. Yunus in New York, multiple senior diplomats from Bangladesh stated that after the interim government took office on August 8, a high-level U.S. delegation visited Dhaka on September 15. Just two weeks later, President Joe Biden is set to meet the chief advisor of the interim government. This upcoming meeting in New York signals that the U.S. will provide all kinds of support to Bangladesh, including reforms across various sectors, following the recent political transition.

It is worth noting that Dr. Yunus is traveling to New York on Monday, September 23, to attend the United Nations General Assembly. He will deliver a speech at the 79th session of the General Assembly on September 27 and will return to Bangladesh later that night.
