RAB Excluded From Sagar-Runi Murder Probe
The High Court today removed the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from the investigation into the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi.
The high court bench headed by Justice Farah Mahabub and Justice Mahbubul Islam passed the order on Monday (September 30) afternoon following the application of the state party.
According to the High Court, "RAB was removed from the investigation of this murder. It has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the government can conduct an investigation through a task force consisting of experienced, qualified people from various agencies."
The task force was ordered to submit the investigation report to the HC in six months.
The court fixed April 6, 2025, for holding a hearing on the matter.
Earlier on Sunday (September 29), lawyer Shishir Monir was appointed for the first time in the Sagar-Runi murder case by Nowsher Ali Roman, the plaintiff in the case and Runi's brother. He filed a case at Sher-E-Bangla Nagar police station on February 12, 2012.
Sagar Sarowar, news editor of private TV station Maasranga, and his wife Meherun Runi, senior reporter of another channel ATN Bangla, had been killed at their rented flat in the capital's West Rajabazar on February 11, 2012. Their only son Mahir Sarowar Megh, then 5, was home at that time.
The case was initially investigated by an officer of the Sher-E-Bangla Nagar police station. Then on February 16, the investigation of the case was carried out by Rabiul Alam, Police Inspector of the Detective Police (DB) of North.
After 2 months, the High Court ordered the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) to investigate the case. Since then, the organization has not been able to submit the investigation report even after taking 111 times in almost 12 years.
However, the then Home Minister said that within 48 hours, the mystery of the murderers would be revealed to the nation. But the case did not see the face of the light even after an era.
