80 Deaths, 18,097 Infected by Dengue in September

In September, 18,097 people were hospitalized due to dengue infections, and 80 people died, making it the deadliest month for dengue so far this year.

In August, there were 6,521 infections and 27 deaths, while in July, the numbers were much lower, with 2,669 infections and 12 deaths. The total number of dengue cases this year has now risen to 30,938.

Key stats for dengue in Bangladesh in September 2024 and the year so far:

On average, more than 603 people were admitted to hospitals each day in September due to dengue, with a daily mortality rate of 2.66%. The number of infections and deaths in September was more than three times higher than in August, and significantly higher than in previous months this year.

Currently, 3,462 dengue patients are being treated in hospitals across the country. Of these, 1,759 are in hospitals in Dhaka, while 1,703 are in hospitals outside the capital. Of this year’s total dengue patients, 17,430 were from outside Dhaka, and 13,508 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka’s metropolitan areas.

From January 1 to September 30 this year, a total of 30,938 people were hospitalized for dengue across the country, 63% of whom were men and 37% were women. Of the 163 people who have died from dengue this year, 50.9% were women and 49.1% were men.

In 2023, Bangladesh saw the highest number of dengue hospitalizations, with 321,179 cases. In comparison, 101,354 cases were reported in 2019, 62,382 in 2022, and 28,429 in 2021.
