Discussion with BNP Includes Removal of President: Hasnat
Hasnat Abdullah, the convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said that discussions with the BNP included three key issues, one of which was the removal of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
After a two-hour meeting at the BNP Chairperson's office in Gulshan on Saturday, October 26, Hasnat briefed the media about the discussion.
“We have overthrown the fascist Sheikh Hasina. Now, we face another obstacle in dismantling the entire fascist system,” Hasnat said. “For the last two days, we have been engaging with prominent political parties that took part in the mass uprising under our leadership. Today, we had discussions with the BNP as part of that process.”
He mentioned three specific topics that were discussed with the BNP:
Proclamation of a Second Republic – The parties explored how to initiate the process of establishing a second republic.
Removal of the President – The conversation focused on how to expedite the removal of President Shahabuddin, foster political unity, and handle any potential crises that may arise.
Maintaining National Unity – Discussions were held on how to preserve national unity and ensure the continued functioning of the government’s essential operations during this transition.
Hasnat noted that the BNP has not yet made any final decision on the removal of the president. “Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, along with other BNP leaders present at the meeting, listened to our proposals. They assured us that they would discuss these matters within their party forums,” he added.
He further stated that over the past two days, similar meetings were held with Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Andolan Bangladesh, who expressed alignment with their objectives. “Tomorrow, we will meet with the Gono Odhikar Parishad, Ganatantra Manch, and the 12-Party Alliance to discuss how to maintain the unity established on August 5,” Hasnat said.
Alongside Hasnat Abdullah, six other representatives from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Civic Committee attended the meeting. BNP representatives included Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Salauddin Ahmed, and Publicity Secretary Shahiduddin Chowdhury.
