Meeting People’s Expectations is the Hardest Task: Dr. Yunus
Australian Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke met with Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. On Thursday (October 31), he visited the state guest house Jamuna to meet with the Chief Adviser.
During the meeting, the Australian minister said, “I closely observed the student-led movements in Bangladesh and witnessed the celebration of expatriate Bangladeshis following the fall of the autocratic regime.”
Regarding public expectations after the mass uprising, he remarked, “Much hope and expectation have been generated.”
At this time, Dr. Muhammad Yunus commented, “The challenge is immense. Meeting people’s expectations is the hardest task. However, the nation has shown patience. We must rebuild the country.”
He further added, “Rebuilding the country is a huge task, as the autocratic rule has destroyed institutions and severely weakened the economy.”
Professor Yunus expressed gratitude to the Australian minister for visiting Bangladesh during this critical period and for supporting the interim government’s essential reform programs.
The Australian minister informed the Chief Adviser that his government was interested in reopening the visa center in Dhaka and engaging in discussions to curb irregular migration between Bangladesh and Australia.
The meeting also highlighted Bangladesh’s rich history, particularly the historic Language Movement. Additionally, Dr. Yunus discussed the work of various commissions formed by his government, including a five-member commission investigating the hundreds of enforced disappearances during the autocratic regime.
Professor Yunus gifted the Australian minister a book titled Art of Triumph, a collection of graffiti and murals from the time of the mass uprising found on the walls of cities and villages across the country.
The Australian Home Affairs minister appreciated the gift and expressed a desire to visit some areas in the city to see these artworks in person.
