Constitution Won't Change at the Stroke of Anyone's Pen: Dr. Kamal
Dr. Kamal Hossain, Chairman of Bangladesh's Constitution Drafting Committee, stated that the constitution needs to be reconsidered in the current context. "The constitution will not change at the stroke of anyone's pen."
He made this statement on Monday (November 4) as the chief guest at a discussion held in the Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium to commemorate 'November 4, 1972, Constitution Day.' Lawyer Nazmun Nahar read a written statement on behalf of Dr. Kamal Hossain at the event.
Dr. Kamal Hossain said, "Without the people’s opinion, the constitution won’t change simply because someone takes a pen to it. Even if a person, or even the president, feels something is wrong, they should not attempt to change it with the stroke of a pen."
He emphasized the importance of how the constitution is interpreted—whether it’s a correct interpretation or a misinterpretation. The people must remain vigilant, as even the courts can interpret it and may make mistakes. To uphold constitutional governance in the country, people must stay alert.
The chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee stated, “On November 4, 1972, this constitution was adopted as the foundation of an independent Bangladesh. It was built upon our sacrifices and collective aspirations. However, in today’s context, we need to reassess the constitution to ensure it doesn’t allow for any form of oppression.”
Dr. Kamal Hossain called upon the people of the country to build a democratic, just, and equitable nation.
He said there should be no discrimination based on gender, religion, ethnicity, political affiliation, or any other identity. All constitutional reforms must be carried out with this goal in mind.
