Election Depends on Pace of Reforms: Dr. Yunus
The timing of the national parliamentary election depends on the pace of reforms. Following the fall of the authoritarian government, Bangladesh needs to implement significant reforms in its electoral system and other state structures. Only after these reforms will an election be held, stated Interim Government Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
In an interview with AFP on Wednesday (November 13) during the COP-29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, Dr. Yunus shared these insights.
Dr. Yunus emphasized that everyone in the country must unite around these constitutional reforms to agree on the structure of the government, parliament, and electoral guidelines. He added that these reforms need to be completed quickly.
When asked about the duration of the interim government, he responded, "We are an interim government, so the shorter our term, the better. We want to hold elections as soon as possible."
Emphasizing the importance of leading the country toward democratic elections, he said, "Since taking office, we have committed to preparing the country for elections. As soon as we are ready, an election will be held, allowing elected representatives to take charge."
Regarding the instability in various sectors of Bangladesh, the Chief Advisor noted that any government would be concerned about these issues, as is his administration. He expressed hope for resolving these issues and maintaining a peaceful law-and-order environment.
Dr. Yunus also reminded that just three months ago, Bangladesh experienced a mass uprising.
It is noteworthy that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to step down following the student-led mass uprising in July and August. She left the country on August 5, after which an interim government was formed with Dr. Muhammad Yunus as the Chief Advisor.
