BNP Proposes 5 Names for New Election Commission
The BNP has proposed five names to the search committee for the formation of a new Election Commission (EC).
On Wednesday (November 6) afternoon, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie submitted the list of names to the Cabinet Secretary. Later, BNP Media Cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan informed the media of this.
He said that a two-member BNP delegation delivered a confidential letter from BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to the Cabinet Secretary at the Secretariat.
According to BNP sources, the proposed list includes the names of a former judge, former bureaucrat, former military officer, and a woman.
On the same day, a 12-party alliance also submitted a list of five nominees. In the afternoon, Shahadat Hossain Selim, Chairman of Bangladesh LDP, and Syed Ehsanul Huda, Chairman of Bangladesh National Party, submitted the names of five candidates for the Election Commissioner positions to the Cabinet Secretary.
Earlier, last Sunday, the search committee issued a notice requesting names for the new Election Commission.
The notice stated that according to the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2022, the search committee has been formed to recommend qualified individuals to the President for the positions of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. Political parties and professional organizations may propose up to five names by 5 p.m. on November 7. Individuals may also submit their own names if interested.
