Clashes and Tensions Escalate Outside AL HQ on Shaheed Noor Hossain Day
In the capital's Bangabandhu Avenue, several individuals were seen being beaten in front of the Awami League's central office. Some of their clothes were torn or ripped off. This incident took place today, Sunday, shortly before 11 a.m.
A group of people attacked them while chanting slogans like "Unite Zia's soldiers" and "Catch every League member, grab and slaughter them." Police were present while one person was being beaten. Some of those who were attacked were seen being taken away by the police.
During the anti-Ershad movement, Jubo League activist Noor Hossain had taken to the streets with the slogans "Down with dictatorship, let democracy be freed" written on his chest and back. He was shot and killed by police that day. This incident happened in 1987. Today, on Shaheed Noor Hossain Day, the Awami League has called for a protest rally at Shaheed Noor Hossain Square at Dhaka's Zero Point at 3 p.m. Following a Facebook post announcing this program, tensions have risen.
Highlighting the interim government's strict stance against this program, Chief Advisor's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam made a Facebook post yesterday, Saturday. Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan also issued a stern warning in a Facebook post. They have announced that the ousted Awami League, due to a student-public uprising, will not be allowed to hold any marches, rallies, or programs on the streets.
Meanwhile, under the banner of the Fascism Resistance Platform, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has scheduled a program at 12 p.m. today at Dhaka's Zero Point in Gulistan. The program is titled "Mass Gathering Demanding Justice for the Fallen Autocrat Awami League.
