AL Must Be Excluded from Future Elections: Mafuz Alam
Mafuz Alam, a key figure in the July revolution and an advisor to the interim government, declared that the Awami League (AL) should be barred from participating in future elections. He warned that the return of AL to power would signify the return of fascism to the country.
He made these comments at a roadside gathering in Hajiganj, Chandpur, on Saturday (January 25).
Mafuz Alam further stated that pro-Delhi forces would no longer have a place in Bangladesh. Only pro-Bangladesh forces, including BNP and Jamaat, will engage in politics in the country. He emphasized that there would be no opportunity for any "Baksal" regime in this country.
Highlighting the need for electoral reforms, Mafuz Alam stressed that the institutions ravaged by the current Hasina government must be restored before elections can be held. He argued that without these reforms, the people's rights would be compromised.
He added that those who come to power through fair elections will establish the rights of the people. However, he made it clear that the rehabilitation of the Awami League will never be allowed in this country.
Advisor Mafuz Alam said that ensuring justice for the crimes of the past Hasina government is the primary objective of this government. Until the crimes of murder, abduction, and rape from the past 16 years are judged, the goal of this government will not be fulfilled.
Reflecting on the sacrifices of the July revolution, Alam reminded the crowd of the martyrs and injured, saying, "We do not want to serve Delhi; we want to serve Dhaka."
Later in the day, Mafuz Alam was honoured with a civic reception at 4:00 pm at the Ramganj Government College grounds in Lakshmipur, his birthplace, organized by the local community.
