December: The Month of Pride and Victory for Bengalis
Once again, the month of December, a symbol of Bengali pride and victory, has arrived. It is the month when, in the thousand-year history of the Bengali people, they gained their identity, independence, and sovereign flag. This December marks the 53rd year of an independent Bangladesh, achieved through a sea of bloodshed. During this month of victory, the grateful Bengali nation pays heartfelt homage and respect to the valiant martyrs of the Liberation War, whose supreme sacrifice brought us the priceless gift of freedom.
Today is December 1. Fifty-three years ago, in December 1971, the Bengalis achieved ultimate victory after nine months of bloody struggle for liberation. On December 16 of that year, with the blood of 3 million martyrs and the sacrifices of 200,000 mothers and sisters, we won our independence. It was through their sacrifices that we gained a sovereign nation and the red-and-green flag. Thus, December stands as a month of glory and pride for the Bengali identity and homeland.
The Liberation War of 1971 is the most significant event in the long political history of Bangladesh. Through an armed struggle for independence, the social, political, and economic aspirations of the Bengali nation, nurtured over millennia, were realized in this historic month.
As in every year, this month of victory will see the nation celebrating with joy and reverence. People will bow their heads in respect, love, and mourning for the countless heroic freedom fighters. Various programs will resonate with memories of the Liberation War's triumph and the gratitude and love for the martyrs.
This month also serves as a time to reaffirm the spirit of the Liberation War, ensuring national resurgence, the socio-economic dignity and security of freedom fighters, and the cultivation of respect for their sacrifices. Like every year, the day will be observed with these objectives in mind.
In December, the month of victory, political parties across the country have announced their programs. From student movements against inequality and national civic committees to political parties like the BNP and Jamaat, all are set to organize month-long activities to commemorate the spirit of liberation.
