After delays caused by various complications, nearly 18,000 Bangladeshi workers were initially expected to travel to Malaysia last year. However, there is good news now, as 7,964 workers will be able to join Malaysia in the first phase.

This announcement was made by Mohammad Rafiqul Alam, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a weekly briefing on January 27. He explained that the migration issue had been highlighted by Bangladeshi High Commissioner Md Shameem Ahsan to Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs, Saifuddin Ismail, in December 2024. In response, Saifuddin suggested forming a joint technical committee involving Malaysia’s Immigration Department and the Bangladeshi High Commission to tackle the challenges and ensure a smooth process for the workers' migration.

The committee has met twice in the past month, consulting with all relevant authorities in Malaysia. As a result, 7,964 workers were selected for the first phase of migration from the original group of 18,000.

The spokesperson further mentioned that the technical committee is finalizing the process and timeline for these workers' departure.

Malaysia's labour market reopened in August 2022 after a long closure. Since then, up until May 31, 2024, approximately 475,000 workers from various countries, including Bangladesh, have migrated to Malaysia through 101 recruiting agencies.
