Myanmar moves away from St. Martin’s claim following protest

After making claim that some parts of St. Martin’s island as their territory, the Myanmar authority has removed the fake information following strong protest from Bangladesh.

It was informed at the 20th parliamentary standing committee meeting of the foreign ministry held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Sunday.

Senior Secretary of the foreign ministry Md. Shahidul Haque said, strong protest was expressed to the Ambassador of Myanmar appointed in Bangladesh after he was summoned in the foreign ministry. Later Myanmar authority removed it from their website.

Parliamentary standing committee Chairperson Dr. Dipu Moni presided over the meeting. Besides, the committee member and Foreign Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam, Muhammad Faruq Khan, Selim Uddin and Begum Mahzabin Khaled took part in the meeting. Senior Secretary of the foreign ministry Md. Shahidul Haque, Maritime Affairs Unit Secretary Md. Khorshed Alam and other senior officials of foreign ministry and parliamentary secretariat were also present in the meeting.

It is mentionable that the population department of the Myanmar government recently published a map of their country on the website where Bangladesh’s St. Martin’s island was shown as part of their territory. In that map Myanmar’s main territory and St. Martin on the Bay of Bengal was marked with the same color. On the other hand Bangladesh was marked with another color.
