The Law Adviser to the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr Asif Nazrul, has stated that the arrest procedure of model Meghna Alam was not carried out properly.
He made the comment during a press conference on contemporary issues held on Sunday (April 13) at the Ministry's conference room in the Secretariat.
Meghna Alam, the winner of Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020, was arrested by police at her residence in Dhaka. Two days later, she was sent to jail by court order under the Special Powers Act, which authorized her detention for 30 days.
Speaking on the matter, Dr Nazrul said, "There are some allegations against Meghna that are currently under investigation. However, the process followed during her arrest was not appropriate. The Ministry of Home Affairs is reviewing the situation and will take necessary actions soon."
He also mentioned that during the previous administration, recommendations were made to withdraw 7,184 politically motivated cases. "Sometimes cases arise that are not politically driven, and our officials are working with sincerity to assess each one carefully," he said.
Regarding the major hacking incident at Bangladesh Bank, Dr Nazrul stated that a review committee was formed, with him serving as the head. The committee includes the central bank's governor and other key members. "There was a plan to siphon off $2 billion from Bangladesh Bank—an organized effort to loot the country. If it had succeeded, it could have led to famine," he warned.
He criticized the previous government for delaying the investigation and added that the CID's report on the matter had recommended omitting the names of certain Bangladesh Bank officials involved. "We've asked what actions were taken against those initially named in the CID report, and further directives have been issued," he concluded.
