Dhaka will host 19 temporary cattle markets for this year's Eid-ul-Adha, with 10 located in areas under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 9 under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). The city authorities have already invited open tenders for lease agreements.

The cattle markets will operate for five days, including the three days before Eid. Security arrangements will be in place, and authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against leaseholders who violate the rules.

Preparations are underway as the Eid festival approaches. DNCC and DSCC have begun setting up the markets, following government guidelines. However, due to a court directive, the popular markets at Aftabnagar and Meradia will not be allowed this year.

In the north, the permanent market at Gabtoli will function alongside temporary ones in Bosila, Mirpur, Khilkhet, and Badda. DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz assured that all markets will be operated peacefully and transparently, with leases awarded to the highest bidders. He emphasised that leaseholders must maintain cleanliness and avoid disrupting public roads.

In the south, markets will be set up in locations such as the open space at North Shahjahanpur Maitree Sangha Club and Sadek Hossain Khoka field. DSCC Administrator Dr Md Zillur Rahman confirmed that the initial round of tendering has been completed, and lease awards will strictly follow government instructions.

The deadline for submitting bids in the second phase is May 27. Afterwards, the highest bidders will be finalised. Both city corporations have pledged to ensure proper management of the markets and strict monitoring of waste disposal throughout the Eid season.

To ensure order, a multi-layered security detail involving the Army, Police, RAB and BGB was deployed across the city. Begum Khaleda Zia’s death at age 80 follows a month-long battle with chronic health complications at Evercare Hospital.  Her legacy spans 41 years of political leadership, during which she transitioned from a homemaker to a three-time Prime Minister and five-term Member of Parliament. She was famously known for her steadfast resolve during the anti-autocracy movements of the 1990s and for her historic record of never losing an election she contested. While the general public was restricted from the immediate burial site to maintain solemnity, the sheer scale of the gathering at her janaza served as a powerful testament to her enduring connection with the people of Bangladesh.  As she was laid to rest with military honors, the nation observed a day of mourning for the woman who spent over four decades shaping its democratic path.
