Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has expressed deep sorrow and profound shock over the tragic deaths of 16 people and several injuries in a devastating fire at a printing factory and chemical godown in the capital's Mirpur area.
Tarique Rahman wrote on his official Facebook page on Tuesday evening, "I am deeply saddened by the tragic fire at the Mirpur RMG factory and chemical warehouse that claimed at least 16 lives. May Allah grant eternal peace to the departed souls, and may He bless the injured with a swift and full recovery.
Heartbreaking incidents like these repeat themselves, leaving behind grief and many questions. We must work to ensure workplace safety standards are implemented so that no more lives are lost due to negligence.
I call upon the authorities to take immediate, decisive action to ensure transparency in the investigation, hold those responsible to account."
Fire Service and Civil Defence told the media that they recovered at least 16 bodies. Officials suspect the victims died of suffocation from toxic smoke and gas. Several others sustained injuries or burns, three of whom were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
