Bangladesh and Kuwait agreed to strengthen their cooperation in multiple sectors, including political, economic, defence, labour, development and cultural fields, said a joint statement issued by the governments of both countries on Sunday.

The statement was issued after the first-ever Political Consultation between the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and the Government of the State of Kuwait held in the capital on the same day.

The meeting was co-chaired by Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Secretary (Bilateral) Dr Md Nazrul Islam and Kuwait's Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ambassador Sameeh Essa Johar Hayat.

The press release added that the consultations were held in a warm and friendly atmosphere, reaffirming the historic friendship that began with Kuwait’s early recognition of Bangladesh in 1973 and support for its OIC membership in 1974.

The dignitaries decided to hold Political Consultations biennially, alternately in Dhaka and Kuwait City, and to promote high-level visits and exchanges among officials, business communities and cultural representatives.

The two sides reviewed defence cooperation, noting Bangladesh’s contribution under Operation Kuwait Punargathan, and agreed to enhance collaboration in training, disaster response and cyber security.

They discussed expanding manpower cooperation, finalizing pending MoUs, in line with Kuwait Vision 2035.

Both sides stressed the importance of enhancing trade and investment, especially in energy, infrastructure, ICT, and halal food sectors. Bangladesh invited Kuwaiti investors to explore opportunities in Special Economic Zones and Hi-Tech Parks.

They agreed to reactivate the Joint Trade Committee and convene a Bangladesh–Kuwait Business Forum in 2026.

Bangladesh expressed satisfaction over Kuwait Fund (KFAED) assistance and agreed to explore new cooperation in renewable energy, climate-resilient infrastructure and aviation connectivity.

To ensure order, a multi-layered security detail involving the Army, Police, RAB and BGB was deployed across the city. Begum Khaleda Zia’s death at age 80 follows a month-long battle with chronic health complications at Evercare Hospital.  Her legacy spans 41 years of political leadership, during which she transitioned from a homemaker to a three-time Prime Minister and five-term Member of Parliament. She was famously known for her steadfast resolve during the anti-autocracy movements of the 1990s and for her historic record of never losing an election she contested. While the general public was restricted from the immediate burial site to maintain solemnity, the sheer scale of the gathering at her janaza served as a powerful testament to her enduring connection with the people of Bangladesh.  As she was laid to rest with military honors, the nation observed a day of mourning for the woman who spent over four decades shaping its democratic path.
