Oman celebrates its National Day, marking a rich history that began with the founding of the Al Bu Said State on November 20, 1744, by Imam Ahmed bin Said Al Busaidi.

Imam Al Busaidi is credited with uniting the country under a single banner and laying the essential foundations of the modern Omani state, rooted in sovereignty, unity, and dignity.

The day also serves as an important occasion to honor the successive Sultans of Oman. Over generations, they have successfully preserved the nation’s unity and prosperity while strengthening Oman’s significant civilizational and humanitarian presence both regionally and internationally.

On this day, Oman and Bangladesh celebrate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations with a commitment to deepening their partnership.

This historic golden jubilee reflects the enduring strength of the bilateral ties, which have recently expanded beyond traditional sectors to include strategic cooperation in energy security (such as the long-term agreements for the supply of LNG), investment promotion, and diplomatic training.

Meanwhile, the celebration coincides with the achievements realized since the Renaissance of Oman, which began in 1970 under the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and has continued under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. Oman Vision 2040 represents an ambitious roadmap for building a diversified economy, a thriving society, and modern, efficient institutions.

In 2025, Oman has witnessed important milestones in economic and financial modernization, including enhancing public spending efficiency, obtaining investment-grade credit ratings, signing international agreements to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, and preparing to implement a progressive income tax system to ensure social justice and diversify revenue sources. Non-oil sectors now contribute over 65% of the GDP, while public debt has decreased to around 35%, reflecting the resilience of the Omani economy and the confidence of international institutions in its performance.

In the field of environmental sustainability, Oman is progressing toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 through renewable energy and green hydrogen projects. The National Center for Net Zero Emissions has been established to coordinate national efforts, alongside new policies for carbon trading and environmental performance certification. The number of natural reserves has increased to 31 protected areas, and over three million trees have been planted to protect natural resources for future generations.

Bilateral Relations with Bangladesh

The relationship is further solidified by the large and valuable Bangladeshi community in Oman (estimated at around 700,000), whose contributions are vital to Oman's economy, reinforcing the strong human and social bonds between the two nations. Bangladesh established its diplomatic mission in Oman in March 1983 at the level of Charge d’Affaires, later elevated to Ambassador in 1995.

Oman opened a Representative Office in Dhaka in 2001 and established a fully accredited Embassy in 2012. On 2 October 2022, Oman upgraded its diplomatic representation to Ambassadorial level by appointing its first resident Ambassador to Bangladesh. Currently, Mr. Jamil Haji Ismail Al Balushi serves as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Sultanate of Oman to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

Oman hosts a large Bangladeshi community of around 700,000 people, who play a significant role in supporting the Sultanate’s economic development, reflecting the enduring human and social bonds between the two nations. The two countries have also signed long- term agreements for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Bangladesh, enhancing energy cooperation.

Oman’s National Day is a celebration of a deeply rooted national journey built on dedication, work, and achievement—a journey of hope toward a prosperous future. Under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, the Sultanate continues to advance confidently toward realizing its national aspirations, balancing development with environmental preservation, promoting the values of justice and tolerance, and fostering a culture of work and optimism among its people.
