Dhaka summoned the Indian High Commissioner on Sunday to formally express its grave concern over India's perceived failure to prevent fugitive former Prime Minister and Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina from issuing inflammatory statements.
Bangladesh alleges that Hasina is using her platform to incite her supporters to engage in terrorist activities aimed at disrupting the upcoming 13th National Parliament Election in 2026.
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday afternoon, according to a press release issued by the ministry.
“Bangladesh reiterated her call for the expeditious extradition of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to face the sentences handed down by the judicial authorities in Bangladesh,” said foreign ministry.
The Ministry further drew the envoy's attention to the anti-Bangladesh activities allegedly carried out by other fugitive Awami League members residing in India. These activities reportedly involve planning, organizing, and assisting terrorist acts inside Bangladesh aimed at hindering the upcoming general elections.
The statement concluded with a call for the Indian government to act swiftly to stop the "criminal actions by these fascist terrorists" and to extradite them to Bangladesh as soon as possible.
Additionally, the Ministry sought India’s cooperation in preventing suspects involved in the recent attempted assassination of Bangladeshi political leader Sharif Osman Hadi from escaping to India. Should they enter Indian territory, Bangladesh requested their immediate apprehension and extradition.
The Ministry stressed that, as a neighboring country, India is expected to support the people of Bangladesh in upholding justice and safeguarding democratic processes.
In response, the High Commissioner of India reportedly emphasized that India anticipates peaceful elections in Bangladesh and expressed his country's readiness to offer all necessary cooperation in this regard.
